media

For the past years, the entire buzz in the world of technology and networking has been about social media. Social media is an unlimited websites that provide its users fast media tools. It is all combined in a locality of sites aimed at sharing texts, media, photos, videos, and sources. News aggregation and online references and sources are also counted in the social media market of communication.
For you to understand what is social media you should distinguish between new media and new social media. It is exactly the mother and her daughter! To elaborate more; social media is social news, social activities and interactions within peers throughout new media. If you have new media as a chocolate, then social media is the icing on top of the flavor!

mic

In our social media class, taught by Ayman Itani, our last project is about new media technology. We had to interview three different people (age, name and position) asking them five questions per each about new media technology. Well for me, I had no shock from the people’s reactions. Whenever I ask individuals for interviews, since my major is journalism, they just run away and give excuses. But for this project people whom we interviewed were totally satisfied. You know why? It is social media! We ask them “do you mind answering questions about new media, like facebook, twitter, wordpress, or hotmail”? They would definitely agree with a big smile on the face. Again, because it is social media! A place where you narrate your story in life without even recognizing it is stored in a memory for life.

In the process of doing the project and interviewing individuals, we found both similarities and differences in their reflection and perception about social media. The first category: pro social media technology, they were more aware of new media as a technology revolution because they are active users online and realize the importance of new media nowadays, and how it is promising for the long future. The second category: pro facebook, they relate social media concepts to facebook activities, such as notifications, wall posts, profile information, events invitations, and profiles information. The third and last category: partly against social media. In other words, they are against bushfire of rumors that can be spread worldwide. For them this is where the disadvantage comes in. It is hard to carry out damage control when you are dealing with social media, the gigantic network world. “Bare in mind your good reputation can be soiled within minutes,” said Mohannad Zahran one of the interviewers for “what does new media mean to you?” project.

smart phones

In addition, we were asked by our instructor Ayman Itani to record the videos with our smart phones. The process of uploading the videos in our personal channels on youtube was the long part of the project. In totality it took the class a ratio of 30 minutes of the upload on youtube simply because the Internet connection in Lebanon just sucks!

The editing part was optional, such as adding effects, and cutting unnecessary parts from the videos. What was required is the video subtitles in our youtube channels. Some of the students replaced subtitles with annotations on youtube as a smart alternate since it is really easier than following up with http://captiontube.appspot.com/help/.

At the end, the lausocial class students are considered active bloggers by now. Hopefully by reading our blogs we can offer you valuable knowledge that can be applied positively in your daily life. There are many experiences and skills to be explored in this world; hopefully some of it can be share at lausocial blogs so that we can always offer you the best of the best in the blogosphere.

Social Networking Tips

tips

1.Involve yourself expertly in sites such as Twitter, and facebook while posting for your blog. You are going to boost your blogs viewers. Remember, you can’t just post something in your blog, and wait for readers to visit and read!
2.If you can’t say something in someone’s face, don’t lose your determination in saying it. Your blog is your narrator. Just write what you really want to say about, and make your blog as personal as you can. This way, you are considered as practiced and proficient blog user.
3.If social media networks are there to fulfill your true prospective and potentials, then it needs to reflect and echo the wisdom of your own storytelling.
4.Avoid the typical copy-paste writing! No one would be interested in reading bunch of Wikipedia information that is found easily in Google!
5.Make you blog your professional reference. Protect your identity as a blogger online. Social profiles are public to Internet surfers, and if you want to share pictures or videos of a crazy night out you better ensure that only trusted friends could see them.
5.Make yourself close to your readers. Personalize your post and chatter with your readers. If you have a personal blog that doesn’t mean you are unique unless
you intended to be that way.

social network

Imagine yourself in a world that is full of options, opportunities, entertainment, fast communication, commenting on profiles, having random friendships or relationships, joining groups and having discussions, receiving breaking news so that you would be from the first to know, and above all it cost nothing. Well, this is a quick and a modern definition of new media technologies from an LAU student, Weam Al Dakheel. This exactly how I personally can describe what is social media for me so in order for you to understand my individualistic perception on social media!

For you to understand what is social media you should distinguish between new media and new social media. It is exactly the mother and her daughter! To elaborate more; social media is social news, social activities and interactions within peers throughout new media. If you have new media as a chocolate, then social media is the icing on top of the flavor.

ayman itani

In my social media class, taught by Ayman Itani, our last project is about new media technology. I had to interview three different people (age, name and position) asking them five questions per each. Well, I had no shock from the people’s reactions. Whenever I ask people for interviews, since my major is journalism, they just run away and give excuse. But for this project people whom I interviewed or asked them for were totally satisfied. You know why? It is social media! I come to them saying,” do you mind asking you about facebook, twitter, wordpress, or hotmail”? They would definitely agree with a smile on the face. Again, because it is social media, a place where you narrate your story in life without even recognizing the value of doing that in a stored memory for life.

The first video:
Mohannad zahran is a big freak of technology!! He just made it easy for me to control the camera and keep asking. While recording the minute I started recording, he just kept describing his passion and interest for social and new media aspects in life.
tec world

As I mentioned on my first post about the project that since he was a young kid he had a habit of collecting new gadgets and playing video games. He is a big fan of all media kinds even primary ones like pagers!! He is a genius in dealing with complicated machines, and spends 30 minutes breaking down an iPod! Last but not least, he stays connected to his outside world 24/7 through his BB and iPhone both in one hand!

The second video:
i hate tec

Wassim Dakhour, is a formal student who is majoring in political science and international affairs. I expected him to give me a pro user attitude, but it turned the other way. I recognized while interviewing him and after that, when we discussed broadly what is social media, that he is partly against social media put not media in general, remember how we distinguished the differences between the two terms. For Wassim social media has disadvantages more than advantages for that he would not want to drag himself more into the gigantic bubble of social media that provide you with two-way communication.

The third video:
love tec

Mona Hammood, is a Moroccan LAU student, Beirut. She lived in Dubai for six years, and suddenly she had to move to Lebanon. “Leaving your friends and community is really hard for you to muddle through easily after a long life time,” said Mona. But what makes it much easier for Mona to cope is what social media can offer her. She can now Skype, update, talk, and communicate with her friends and family rapidly and addictively! I felt her passion and enthusiasm! For me, Mona was totally excited while talking and discussing with me what is social media as she missed her appointment with a friend to keep on loving social media talks more and more.

In addition, I recorded the first video with G10 Canon Camera. The other two I used my BlackBerry curve for recording. I didn’t find any difficulties with the Canon, nor my BB. I uploaded the videos with a Bluetooth device for the videos on my BB, and the Canon photo device for the video I took with my Camera. In totality it took me 10 minutes for the process of uploading and more than an hour to download my videos on youtube, because the Internet connection in Lebanon just sucks!

At first, I started editing my videos with the iMovie program on Mac. I enjoyed working, editing, and adding effects to my videos. But the worse part is that I didn’t save my work and it all vanished in seconds. To use iMovie is not that difficult, it is more professional than any other editing programs such as moviemaker. I had it difficult to save up my work and have it separately from the video lists on the program itself. After that, I ended up editing and adding subtitles and annotations on youtube. I tried to use this application, suggested from the teacher, http://captiontube.appspot.com/help/ but I just found it very difficult to follow up and complete the editing part.

master class
I really enjoyed doing this project. Maybe because I was understandable what can social media add positively to you as a living entity. It never goes the wrong way only if you decided to do it that way. For this project I had no feelings that I would get bored nor fed up from doing it. Overall, it was a beneficial experience to me, to keep me with an eye open on social media adventures and the other one on you, my followers☺

To conclude my proposal on my media project, I would like to share with you a story that really left a strong impression on me.
nightmare
Nothing serious! It is all about me. I was unknowledgeable about what is social media about? From facebook, twitter, and blogging it all went right, as it never has been planned. Now, I am sharing part of my public and private life with millions throughout an oversized network. And above all my blog carried this month above 1000 viewers. I just want to thank you all for making this blog means to you much than me.

Chatroulette

Posted: May 15, 2010 in New Media 2010

chat

Chatroulette is a quickie chat room that instantly sets you up with a random stranger from potentially anywhere in the world.Visitors to the website randomly begin an online chat (video, audio and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection.

It is a website that allows you to chat and meet with people you would never thought they even exist. Many of which have their web cam and mic hooked up, so you might see some things that you dont want to. I personally saw a sample of weirdos!!
I tried to find other options rather than watching people naked or showing their sex organs, but it just failed. I clicked the next button to get someone new, but got nothing new!

It is all random in random, take a look:

Random Body!

Random Body!

Well yes, I had this sick man pumping on my screen, and I had nothing to do but to hide from the cam, and take a minute of shock!

Omegle and Chacha are another websites just like Chatroulette which basically aim for the same thing. I dont usually use these kinds of websites because i think it’s for people who are interested in meeting or chatting with people just randomly.

Yes, it can work here and anywhere for those who like the idea of it. Some people simply like talking to strangers and maybe build new relationships with them.

What is foursquare?

Foursquare is a four square, I mean: it is a location where you search for locations to search other locations inside a square called foursquare. It is a mobile social network application, founded by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai and is based in New York City, in which you share with friends your location in any spot around the world by ‘checking in” via your iPhones , Blackberries, and Nokias, (called smartphones).
In addition, you can still connect your foursquare account to your facebook and Twitter account. By ‘checking in’ you are actually giving updates to your friends ‘where you are’ and what actually you are doing at that TIME and PLACE! This just awesome! You can actually update whomever you have on your list (make sure the people you ditched are not included) the place you are chilling at, few minute maybe a surprise…they all would join you! For that, I will not use it when I am in hide from a person, or a friend! But for any other reason I will be stuck in the foursquare location, chasing people, and updating them at the same time.
Above the process of installation and registration is effortless, very easy. You just need four clicks and you are in a worldwide cube, foursquare!
Visit the website and start adding tips, to-do list. It is so exciting when you actually have the opportunity to give feedbacks, comments, tips, and lists knowing that you are offering this to 4o million foursquare users around the world. I have a target in foursquare, I don’t want to enter this square without being at least a mayor of three or five places around the world, not only in my current city, Beirut. The three places in Beirut I would like to become the mayor of is ABC mall Ashrafiah, AlMayyas and Laziz Restaurant:)

Welcome to foursquare! It is a message from foursquare social network, let’s check it.
We’re all about helping you find new ways to explore the city.
We’ll help you meet up with your friends and let you earn points and unlock badges for discovering new places, doing new things and meeting new people. [Learn more!]
If you own a bar or restaurant, foursquare can help you find new ways to connect with your customers. If you’re a developer, check out the foursquare API. Now you can follow your international cube (foursquare) on Twitter and Tumblr for the latest updates! When we say Social Networking it is always related to escalating your social circle by meeting new friends, professionals, and interacting with outsider people. This is exactly what foursquare offers you can to know new individuals, and places.

application mobile

But still what about business deals and opportunities?
Foursquare may not offer you this business services directly, but still you can take advantage of the consumers in foursquare social network. It is your chance to have a two-way communication with under water buyers, above all wit less time and cost. It is a business in social networks. How easy it can be? You find your friends and consumers in split seconds answering your message, updates, tweets, post…etc. It is unlimited spaced world that allow you the apportunity to advertise with no cost???
While social networking you can always ask for their help to give you a few pointers and e-mail addresses and you can be on your way to contact many more individuals who could benefit your business.

So why NOT?? Take advantage of social networking and use it instead of spending your precious time and money on placing pricey advertisements in newspapers, TV, and magazines. With social networking you have it all.

My Foursquare Page

My Foursquare Page

I am preparing for my NEW MEDIA project, in which I have to interview three people from different age groups. The objective of choosing these three people is to question their minds about SOCIAL MEDIA.

social media

What is social media?
To be honest, at first (before my social media class) I had no clue what social media can really add to my life. From, Twitter, Scribble, WordPress, WAN, TweetDeck, Tweets, Live Coverage, WIFI, Blogging…etc, all are contemporary terms, which I wasn’t fully aware of their significance. SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS basically allows you to engage dynamically within a gigantic bubble, called new media world!

Who are the three people I chose for my interviews?

First, Morinah from Philippine, who is working as a part-time cleaner for dorm students. Maybe some would be asking why the choice came on her. Well, Morinah is an expert-internet user. From surfing networks, skyping with her family in Philippines, downloading music from iTunes, and purchasing hair product from the Internet, this is how Morinah experience new media technologies within her simple live.

1. What does skype mean to you?
2. Do you know Twitter? If yes, whom are you following? And how did you figure out there is something called Twitter on earth?
3. Do you have a facebook account?
4. What was the last technology device you have bought?
5. Are you planning to get a BlackBerry to stay updated through your mobile phone 24/7?

Second, Hiba Alosta, a 17 years old student. Why would I ask a young teenage about NEW SOCIAL MEDIA. Well, I figured out that they are the most active and well-informed users about ‘The Socialism of Media,’ a term I just invented by now!! And by the way, the 18 classmates of my brother in high school have BlackBerries, with Twitter, Facebook, Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo all downloaded in their curves and bolds!

1. Since when do you have BlackBerry? And how many tweets do you have up till now?
2. What can you tell me about NEW SOCIAL MEDIA? How it is affecting your life generally, and your daily bases activities specifically?
3. If I sentenced you not to use your bb for one day, can you describe for me your conditions?
4. What newness NEW SOCIAL MEDIA is adding to your life?
5. What is your most visited website, and why ?

Third, Mohannad Zahran, LAU interior design student. Since he was a young kid he had a habit of collecting new gadgets and playing video games. He is a big fan of all media kinds even primary ones like pagers!! He is a genius in dealing with complicated machines, and spends 30 minutes breaking down an iPod! Last but not least, he stays connected to his outside world 24/7 through his BB and iPhone both in one hand!

1. BB and iPhone, how can you describe your interaction within NEW SOCIAL MEDIA technologies throughout your daily life?
2. What was your first post on Twitter about?
3. Do you think of doing your own website, to publish your projects and drawings?
4. How much time you spend online?
5. Do you know what a blog is? Do you have one?
